Staffordshire Bull Terriers - Breed History
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are related to the Mastiff-like dogs. The exact origin of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is rather vague. Apparently, the breed started in Staffordshire. The breed's history can be traced back to the Old Bulldog, that was crossed with British terriers. The breed was developed for then-popular bull baiting.
The breed's popularity declined in the 1930s when dog fighting was declared illegal. Fanciers in Staffordshire worked to get the breed recognized by The Kennel Club of Great Britain to keep it from becoming extinct. It was accomplished in 1935. Staffordshire Bull Terriers were then recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1952 and the American Kennel Club in 1974. The breed is a contributor to the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier that are larger and taller. Another difference is that ears of the Staffordshire are not cropped.
The breed is known in England as the nursemaid's dog, for its true devotion to children. Staffordshire Bull Terriers of today make wonderful companions, loyal family friends, and eager watchdogs.
